MATERIAL SELECTION · Diecasting Mold ENGINEERING RESOURCES
Consider the job the part has to do
Aluminum alloys are often selected for a useful combination of low weight and thermal performance. Zinc alloys can be useful for detailed shapes, hardware and decorative finishes. Neither material is the best choice for every component.
Review geometry and the production process
Feature size, wall transitions, part size and intended quantity all affect material and process selection. A practical DFM review should consider the geometry and the alloy together.
Include the finishing and assembly requirements
Coating, corrosion exposure, threads and mating parts may change the decision. Share the complete application rather than selecting material from density or appearance alone.
